From the street to the studio: CCF Academy on Rwandan TV

Not long ago, these young dancers were practising in the fields and streets of Kigali. Then they stood on a national TV talk-show set — CAN shirts on their backs, their own music video playing on the studio screen behind them — as our patron Robert Stephenson and friends of the academy told the CCF story to the country.

From Braveheart to the Kigali runway: CCF dancers debut the African Celtic Kilt

When 21-year-old Boaz Ntagozera settled in to watch Braveheart one evening, he had no idea the film would spark a fashion story. The next morning, his eyes fell on his mother's beautiful Rwandan printed fabrics — and two worlds collided: the swirling kilts of the Scottish Highlands and the vibrant patterns of African cloth.
The design is rooted in history. Boaz drew inspiration from the Pedi people of South Africa's Sekhukhune empire, whose warriors first encountered kilted Scottish regiments in 1879 and made the garment their own — merging it with their existing traditions. "I wanted to celebrate how African communities have historically negotiated and creatively transformed colonial encounters," he says. "The African Celtic Kilt is modern street fashion with a salute to traditional African and Celtic tribal culture."
The kilts also solve real problems for a young dance troupe: they're unisex, one-size-fits-growing-dancers, affordable to make, easy to wash, and they move beautifully in formation. Our patron Robert Stephenson funded the materials and tailoring to bring the look to life.
When CCF took the stage at Kigali Fashion Week 2026 — returned under the theme "Rebirth: Culture Meets Elegance" — the audience didn't just applaud. They asked to buy the kilts off the runway, opening a new income stream for the academy and the young people it serves.

Discovered practising dance in a field behind a Kigali hotel, the young dancers now known as Tia Kids were invited into the music video for Sir Kisoro's collaboration with Rwandan artist Bushali — the chance encounter that sparked the entire academy.
